Even before historic time, this Western States Trail was traversed by Native Americans, then came the Gold Rush miners, horseback riders, and runners. Today it remains mostly untouched by development and is one of the few trans-Sierra routes as it appeared in history.

To educate and entertain the public about the history, heritage, and contemporary usage of the trans-Sierra passage known today as the Western States Trail, and to act as a repository for significant and meaningful physical artifacts relevant to the trail.

Primary Objectives
The primary objectives of the Western States Trail Museum are as follows:
Provide for the collection and display of historical archives relating to the historic Western States Trail route through the Sierra Nevada. This rugged route was once used during the early history of California and Nevada by Native Americans, pioneers and Gold Rush emigrants to California, and early Express Riders of Wells Fargo and Adams Express Companies.
Visiting Historic Sites
Rediscovery of the Trail and the Birth of the Tevis Cup
The Museum will display the historic film of the re-discovery, signing and mapping of the trail that began in the early 1930s by individuals who wanted to keep the trail and its history alive.
The last 67 years of the Western States Trail 100 Miles One Day Ride (Tevis Cup) over the trail from Lake Tahoe to Auburn, a founding event of its kind in the world. Since 1955, horsemen and women from all over the globe have competed in the Tevis Cup Ride through the rugged Sierra Nevada.
Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run
The Museum will preserve the history of 47 years of the Western States 100 Miles Endurance Run between Tahoe Palisades (formerly Squaw Valley) and Auburn, an international ultra-marathon competition and founding event of its kind. The Western States Endurance Run is considered the crown jewel of ultra-marathons.
